UGA Week 4!

I can’t believe it’s the last full week of June! Where has the time gone??

Monday (6/22)

We had a rather late start today; Florence and I met Kris for a meeting in the Auxiliary Services building at 1:30 pm. The meeting was about a new professional development program, Stepping Stones, which will allow employees to get a chance to work in a different area of the department if they have an interest in that area. This program allows for movement within the department; this way

, employees won’t feel stuck in their position. It was interesting getting to see how new programs are developed.
After the meeting we headed over to Bolton and worked with the closing managers for the rest of the evening. We worked with Joey and Ashley to make the assignment sheet for the evening employees; this assigns them the station they will be working in. We were then shown what to look for while making rounds (dirty lines, employees who look like they need help, etc.) Once the orientation rush came in we made rounds around the dining hall to make sure everything was running smoothly. The whole shift was relatively relaxed until closing time. At 8 everyone was moving so fast in order to get out as soon as possible. At this point I went around with Joey wile he assigned closing tasks and checked out stations. It was fun getting to work with the managers and see how they keep the dining halls running smoothly.

Tuesday (6/23)

We started off the morning eating breakfast with Kris, we talked about how the internship is going so far and what to expect for the rest of the summer.
After breakfast we headed over to Central Food Storage to learn about their operations. We started off by talking with Stuart who taught us about Food Pro, the main tool for UGA Foodservice. This is how the dining facilities place orders, stores recipes, holds inventory, aids in forecasting, and so many other things!
We then got a tour of the central warehouse and it is huge! The dining facilities place orders to central and the items get delivered the next morning. We went through the dry good storage, cooler, even the freezer (which was below zero!).
Once we completed our tour we were headed over to O’House to meet about the closing banquet! We met with the team and got the menu finalized and the decorations moving along. It sounds like it’s going to be a great event!
Finally, Rob spent time with us on recipe writing. We spent the rest of the afternoon starting to write out the recipes for our event.

Wednesday (6/24)

Working today in a button down and a tie – catering an etiquette dinner! We started this afternoon packing up the catering truck with everything we would need for the dinner and headed over to the Village Summit. Today was quite the learning experience for me; I got to learn how to properly set a table and how to serve a up-scale dinner. We served the event and then when the event was over we helped pack up the truck again.

Thursday (6/25)

Today I got to work in the Summit with Adam who is an opening assistant manager. We talked about what a typical day is like during the summer versus when school is in session. He then showed me how the schedule is set up; the difference between full-time and student employees work schedules, how to fit in time off, and how to place employees in their positions for the shift. We also talked about discipline and how corrective actions are taken.
At lunchtime we assisted the transition from breakfast to lunch (it only took 10 minutes!), all the breakfast food was taken off the main line and all the lunch food was brought out. Also, during the switch to lunch the salad bar and grill opened up.
After lunch I was able to sit in on two interviews. It was so exciting being on the other side of the table, instead of being the one interviewed I was able to see it from a managerial perspective.
I had a fun day working in the Summit; I enjoyed seeing how two different dining halls could operate so differently.

Friday (6/26)

Today was a busy day bouncing around from office to office. We got to meet with many different people who work for Food Service. We were able to learn about many of the positions by talking to Katrina the Human Resource Manager, Katherine the dietitian, and Cindy who is the Assistant Director of Business Services for Food Service.
We were also able to meet with Ellie and Paul today to talk about our Grab and Go project. We brought in our ideas and are going to bring in samples and start trying out some of our ideas!

Athfest weekend!

Athfest is a music festival that happens every year downtown Athens. This whole weekend I spent downtown with some friends listening to good music. The streets were full of people, artisan markets, and music. Past every corner was another band… it was a blast!
