Week 5!

This past week has just flown by! I continue to enjoy this internship and every day I never know what to expect which is great. We did several tours and took part in different discussions throughout the week. On Monday we had a wonderful tour called Al’s Compost Tour with an incredible guide, Al Matyasovsky. He will be retiring this year and the university will lose a great resource! He has been instrumental in helping the university cut down on the waste that is headed to landfills. The möbius program at Penn State is working to close the loop and trying to create zero waste on campus. In 2012 alone, the University diverted nearly 2/3 of its waste from the landfill through recycling and composting. The tour provided us with an in depth look at how Penn State looks at waste, compost and recycling.

We then on a tour of Beaver Stadium which was truly amazing! It was very cool to learn about the history of the stadium and we got to walk right next to the field! It was very cool to be so close to where all of these really talented football players play as well as get the feeling of how intense football weekends must be with that many people in the stadium. Spider who gave us the tour had been with the team since he was a student, which meant about 30 years! So he really knew his history and had worked with Coach Paterno for many many years. I loved hearing about all of the different things that went on during football seasons, and awesome games-truly such cool stories! Below is a photo that shows the stadium full and then the other one is the stadium when we were there from field level.

We also went on a tour of Wegmans! Which is one of my favorite places! The store manager Jimmy gave us an amazing view of the behind the scenes at the Wegmans stores. The Wegmans brand is dedicated to customer and employee happiness as well as trying to push forward with new and innovative foods. Wegmans also works hard to provide different sustainability options when providing food. I always take a picture of the outside of Wegmans at every one I go to because I just love it so much! The customer service and the food is unparalleled.
